so the pastor says, “draw a picture or write a word, a mark or a symbol that shows what is broken in you.” in a moment an image of a church popped into my mind. in that same moment i realized that my relationship with the church is broken. i’m a minister and the church has broken me. certainly i am not the first (minister or otherwise) to make this claim. one of the greatest reasons i long to be of service to the church is because of how often- throughout my life- i have heard this. the amazing rachel held evans has a career built in large part upon the trail of broken hearts the church has left behind. (note to self: this is not irrepairable damage but there are distinct cracks in the foundation.)
